Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa Scheme Relaunched: Key Information and Application Process

On 26 March 2025, after a nearly two-year pause, the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection formally reopened applications for the “Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa” scheme. This initiative, specifically tailored to non-EU and non-EEA nationals, is designed to position Cyprus as a leading destination for digital nomads by offering a conducive legal and regulatory environment.

Overview of the Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa

The Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa allows eligible third-country nationals who use telecommunications technology to perform their work remotely for employers or clients based outside Cyprus to legally reside in the Republic. The scheme strategically aims to enhance Cyprus’s attractiveness as a hub for electronic and digital services, contributing significantly to the growth of the island’s business ecosystem and broader economic prosperity.

This initiative is a critical element of the Government’s broader “Strategy for Attracting Businesses for Activities or Expansion of their Activities in Cyprus,” underscoring Cyprus’s proactive approach to digital transformation and economic diversification.

Who is Eligible for the Digital Nomad Visa?

Eligible candidates for the Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa must satisfy the following conditions:

  • They are non-EU or non-EEA nationals.

  • Their professional duties can be executed remotely via telecommunications technology.

  • They are either employed by a company registered outside Cyprus or self-employed, providing services remotely to international clients.

  • They must demonstrate a stable and sufficient net monthly income of at least €3,500 after deducting contributions and taxes.

Key Benefits of the Scheme

Successful applicants and their families can benefit significantly from obtaining the Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa, including:

  • The initial residence permit is valid for one year, with the possibility of renewal for an additional two-year period.

  • Digital Nomads can bring their family members, including their spouse, partner in a civil union, and underage children, who will also be granted residence permits for the same duration (though family members are not permitted to engage in employment or economic activities within Cyprus).

  • Digital nomads who stay in Cyprus for more than 183 days in a given tax year can qualify as Cyprus tax residents, provided they are not tax residents elsewhere, thus benefitting from Cyprus’s favourable tax regime.

Procedure for Obtaining the Digital Nomad Residence Permit

Applicants must submit their residence permit applications within three months of arrival in Cyprus at the central offices of the Civil Registry and Migration Department in Nicosia. Appointments may be necessary; applicants are advised to confirm via the Department’s official portal.

Key procedural considerations include:

  • Applications may be submitted personally or through an authorised representative.

  • All documentation must be officially translated and certified as required.

  • Biometric data collection (fingerprints and photograph) is mandatory for applicants over six years of age and can be carried out concurrently with or subsequent to application submission.

  • Applicants already residing legally in Cyprus under a different status may also apply to convert their status to a Digital Nomad residence permit.

Fees and Duration

The following fees apply:

  • €70 for the issuance or renewal of the temporary residence permit.

  • €70 for initial registration in the Aliens’ Registry (applicable only to first-time applicants).

Processing time typically ranges from five to seven weeks. The initial temporary residence permit is valid for one year, renewable subsequently for a maximum of two additional years.
